Butterfly Information
Family Danaidae
Overview: Family Danaidae
This family is one of the smaller families (approx. 300 species) with a majority of these preferring tropical and subtropical climes. Some few, however, venture farther north into more temperate regions.
Many of these butterflies are noted for their migration patterns. One in particular, the Monarch (Danaus plexippus), happens to be one of my personal favorites.

There are two major groups in this family. The Crows and the Tigers.

Tigers are generally brightly colored, with darker coloring along the veins. THeir patterns are usually broken by light-colored dots scattered about the wings.

Crows are darker colored. Many are near black, with a few scattered lighter patches.
