Family Heliconiidae
Overview: Family Heliconiidae
Family Heliconiidae is one of the smaller Families in this listing, containing just
over 70 species. However, this is also one of the most confusing Families for the
beginner, due to vast mimicry and great variation within the same species as to
wing coloration and/or patterning.
The species within this Family are largely protected by having body fluids which
are unpalatable to most predators, and are therefore less flitty and nervous
than other species.
It is to be notes that many of the species within this Family are easily reared in
captivity, and therefore are used largely for experimentation by researchers.
