In spite of the many horror stories of wolves hunting, tracking and killing humans, no such event has ever been confirmed. Their eerie and lonely howl, which can make the blood run cold, is merely their form of communication. Each howl, with its tone, depth, length and frequency carries a different message to the pack, or to the partner who is out of sight.
They're merely "talking".
Once, many years ago, while
camping in the mountains, I heard the call of the wolf. It was both bone
chilling and exhilarating. It left a mark on my soul much in the same manner,
as the screech of the first Wild Bald Eagle,
I'd ever heard. In those days, I was not in tune with the spirits in the
world around me. The feeling didn't mean much , but as my days on this
path increase , my knowledge of the spirits around me grow. There was a
call then, but I was to far removed to understand.
As I spent this weekend
working around my place, with my daughter, 3 Red Tailed Hawks, flew
and danced in the skies above our heads. My daughter and I stopped what
we were doing and watched. The thrill in my
daughters eyes, as she watched a Mother hawk teaching her young
to hunt, was exciting. Then I remembered a cool starlit
mountain camping trip, and the lonesome howl
of Brother Wolf, and wondered if my Daughter would ever get a chance to
hear such a wonderful haunting sound.
A sound which I still feel today.
Then I remembered about
the wildlife restorations going on across the country
and the people willing to work to redo what
was done to the creatures that were here before. Time for me to
do something. I'm not a rich man, but I do vote and pay taxes, and I have
a voice. A voice I have already raised to the Congress of this country.
