Firstly I would like to thank you for stopping by the Martens Family history, My name is Anthony (Tony) Martens and I hope that you enjoy your visit. For the past 6 yrs, I have
been gathering information from different sources, Martens members and other family members, institutes throughout Australia and Germany, for the sole purpose of compiling a family register for all parties that are interested in knowing  where they came from and their forebears and relatives that they know of, and ones they didnt know they had.

In the beginning I was going to publish a book, but due to the costs of publishing and job commitments this didnt eventuate, and now with access to the WWW, I think it is appropriate to place it on here, not only for the family members within Australia but also for the Unknown distant family memebers still within the Germany, and a around the World were ever they are. Hopefully with time I can go back even further than I have been able to and even add new members to the family.

In a history of this type there are unfortunately, always ommissions through the lack of knowledge and sometimes errors for the same reason. If you should find any ommissions or errors, that is factual and you have proof, it would be appreciated if you would notify the compiler at  martensfam@hotmail.com .Some information has not been entered due to a lack of interest or the inability to locate family members. I would like to thank everyone that has contributed to this family tree and hope it opens new frontiers for your children and future Martens Family Members.

Family Name Origin:

Martin(s), Marten(s), Martyn; P Lat Martinus, of Martinus from Mars, God of War.
During the 1400 in medieval europe, people were given surnames by the Lord or Heirachy of the county or town and sometimes given by thier occupation. ( eg; Smith or Schmitt was a Blacksmith in that town). The Martens clan got thier name from catching a ferret type animal called a marten where they would use or sell the skin and meat at the local markets. Later in the century they would use these martens to catch rabbits in there burrows and other small animals, eg rats, birds etc.  ( Weird Hey )
