"I've been noting people's attitutes towards snakes lately. I aquired my snake a month ago in a rescue situation. The reaction of many friends, and all my family, was, "WHY on earth would you want a snake?! I can't stand snakes!!!"
Well, Mr. Slithers is in a prominant area of my house- right there in my kitchen, just as you walk in the door. And I've noticed, no matter what people SAY that they feel about snakes, they are all inevitably drawn over to see this creature. And as Mr. Slithers comes out to observe them in return and they go on talking about how they "hate" snakes, their voices seem to become quieter, their stance looks more relaxed, and soon they are asking questions about this animal that they claim to detest. Most of the people who say that they hate snakes have never been that close to one, and they are actually surprised by the calm, and anything but threatening, attitude of Mr. Slithers.
Yesterday I had to stop by the pet shop for some feeder fish while I was shopping with my mother, one of the people most adamnant that snakes have no place as a pet. I was in the back with the fish, but when I went to look for Mom guess where she was. With the snakes! She was the picture of curiosity and pleasure as she stood there looking over 3 juvenile pythons. "Aren't they pretty?" she says to me as I walked up. My Mom, staunch snake hater, admiring pythons in a pet shop window! She was really excited when she recognised a case of baby garters, "Look! baby Slithers! Oh, how cute!"
I could only smile in wonder as we went home. From my experience in the last month, I'd say there are not nearly as many snake haters out there as there claim to be".
