LIFE HISTORY of Troides helena cerberus (Common Birdwing)
At the end of the 5th instar, the caterpillar rests and prepares for its transformation into a pupa. It spins a girdle around its thorax area and suspends itself from the stem. It remains in this position for about 1-2 days. The fleshy "spines" begin to deteriorate and appears to dissolve. |

After about 2 days, the transformation is complete and the caterpillar becomes a pupa. Note the girdle which supports the heavy pupa from the stem of the food plant. The leafy appearance of the pupa helps to camouflage it from predators. | ![]() |
