This butterfly has a striking pattern
of black veins and rectangular spots, giving it an almost checkered appearance.
Unlike its close relative, the Chequered Lancer (Plastingia naga), which has a white background,
the ground colour of this species is a deep yellow. At a glance, it could
be mistaken for the Chequered Lancer (Plastingia naga) or the Yellow Vein Lancer (Pyroneura
latoia latoia). The abdomen is striped in black and yellow above.
The Yellow Chequered Lancer (Plastingia pellonia) is very rare in Singapore, and over a period of 7 years, I have encountered it only a handful of times, usually along heavily shaded paths within the nature reserves. It has a rapid flight, and zips from leaf to leaf, stopping with its wings folded up. |
