Mycalesis mineus macromalayana (Dark Brand Bush
Brown)
The
dark Brand Bush Brown is one of the most common species of the many look-alike
species of the genus Mycalesis. It is a drab-looking butterfly, with a
dark-greyish brown upperside and a paler underside which features a white
post-discal stripe on the fore and hindwings. There are fewer ocelli on
the underside of the forewing than when compared with the other species
of the genus.
There are a total of 6 species
of the Genus Mycalesis which are found in Singapore. As these are rather
common butterflies, they are usually ignored by most observers.
The caterpillar is believed to
feed on grasses. This specimen is feeding on the ripened inflorescence
of the Singapore Rhododendron (Melastoma malabathricum).
