Are you looking for a Teacher of Business Skills or Technology Center
Coordinator? Perhaps you have other computer support needs which I might help
with. I would love to become more directly involved with an organization which
is leading the current welfare-to-work movement.
My experience as a teacher of secretarial skills is limited to a handful of Word
and Excel classes, but I have a great deal of practical experience in
secretarial, word processing, bookkeeping, data entry and filing tasks. And I
believe I have a gift for teaching, the result of absorbing a lifetime of
lessons from my father, who taught practical writing skills to a generation of
college freshmen.
I have taught computer hardware repair, starting about three years ago as a
volunteer for Nonprofit Technology Resources. I had teamed up with John Zelson,
of the Corp for National Service, and NTR's Director, Stan Pokras, to start a
computer reuse project, the Reuse Collaborative - with the help of staff members
from Lutheran Settlement and the Mayor's Commission on Literacy.
John Zelson and I each led weekly hardware sessions in which community group
staff and volunteers earned computer equipment for their organizations by
helping to reuse donated equipment. I also led computer reuse sessions for
Lutheran Settlement, where I worked with members of Edison Freire's LatinoTech
Collective.
At NTR I was occasionally on the payroll, teaching classes in Word and Excel.
Through NTR's role in LibertyNet's Bridge Project, I had the privilege of
teaching Internet skills to literacy tutors and public school teachers serving
Empowerment Zone residents. This in-depth course included six weekly 3-hour
sessions, covering email and mailing lists, as well as the fine points of web
searching.
NTR could not afford to hire me but did connect me with a job at the Energy
Coordinating Agency of Phila. In 1997 and 1998 I provided computer support to
two dozen staff members in the main office, and served ECA's program needs at
other locations such as the Neighborhood Energy Centers, a handful of Community
Development Corps scattered around the city (including Germantown Settlement)
which deliver services such as Utility Service Assistance and Budget Counseling
under contract with ECA.
Working for ECA was rewarding, but I chose to resign in order to seek an
opportunity to teach computer business skills and/or coordinate community
technology center programs.
This March I returned to NTR as a Technical Support Specialist, refurbishing
computers and teaching classes. I'm looking for work now because NTR has been
unable to keep me fully employed.
While my preference is for full-time employment, I'm also interested in
discussing working on a contract or part-time basis. Most important to me is to
work where I can feel that I'm directly interacting with people in need and
helping them to improve their lives.
I very much appreciate your taking the time to consider putting me to work for
you, or to help me with your suggestions.
