All species belonging to this family build large orb webs when compared to the spider. Except for the genus Cercidia, there's a closed hub in the web. Cyclosa and Argiope webs present a stabilimentum that reflects UV light, attracting insects that are able to see this kind of light frequency.

All araneids are distinguishable by their legs, considerably short and robust, having many spines in most of the genera.
