The Cornered Rat

Welcome to the Cornered Rat, the place where I jot down hard-won information so the next guy doesn't have to run as many mazes as I have. With any luck, you'll find some useful information for the up-and-coming biological scientist, some tips on entering grad school, and the ever-present enormous stack of links. Feedback is our friend, by the way.
Unprovided with original learning, unformed in the habits of thinking, unskilled in the arts of composition, I resolved to write a book. - Edward Gibbon

Molec Bio
on the Web
This set of pages is a short tutorial I wrote for free molecular biology resources on the Web, both online and downloadable. It's a good primer for people just starting out to manipulate sequences for fun and profit without a large budget. Once you get these skills down, you'll know how to manually do for nothing what the fancier software packages charge an arm and a leg to do for you, and you can do it from anywhere.
Grad School Primer
This is an essay I worked up from my experiences assailing the walls around various graduate programs to finagle my way in. It's not earth-shattering stuff. A lot of it's pretty self-evident. Hopefully, though, it'll still be helpful for the next poor sod trying to climb the walls of academia.
Crosswords
These are some crosswords I wrote as notes for some classes I took a number of years ago. Eventually I'll return to making them... but not at the moment.
Links
Links are, of course, de rigeur for this kind of thing, because linking is way easier than creating. This is a good collection of sites that might be useful to someone aiming at a career in the Life Sciences (drum roll, thunderclap), including some web tools, chemistry stuff, bio stuff, journals, societies, schools, etc. I'll be updating it as I find things, too.

What's Happening in Science and Technology Today

Complaints, technical issues and the ubiquitous paeans to my greatness may be sent to Dan McGown here.
