Kare looked blankly at an old note she had last received from her deceased weyrmate, V’nor. He had been helping a friend at Ryslen Weyr while Kare had been getting her weyr ready at Seiryuu Weyr. V’nor and his blue Sovreth had planned on coming to live with them at Seiryuu at the time the letter was being written. But here she was now, nearly six months after the event, and both her and Oroth’s love were dead by the same sickness that they had been trying to help a friend get better from.
Kare and Oroth returned to Ryslen the moment they had heard of the death of Viresa, Light gold Xiorayith’s rider. Upon their return they found that both dragon and rider had died from the sickness and thus the dragon’s body was still in the world. She also found that V’nor and Sovreth had come down with the illness and were taking it upon themselves to despose of the Light queen and her rider in between. Kare and Oroth both tried to stop the blue and his rider but did not succeed. The duo, carrying the deceased pair went between… and never reappeared. For six months white and rider mourned their loss, Oroth looking more gray than white and Kare in turn looking more pale than tan. They stayed in their weyr for many a day, even during the celebration of the opening of Seiryuu Weyr, the flight of Mekoth, and the first clutch hatching were lost upon them. It was when green Vazilth flew that Kare returned some to the real world though she still longed to see V’nor’s face.
Vazilth flies my rider, Oroth informed her rider, her own white wings flaring some, causing snow to scatter from her wery ledge. Kare laid the letter back in the small box she kept of her memories of the man she had loved for around six turns. “So she does, my heart,” Kare replied to her white, her dead pan voice seemed to chuckle for the first time sense that day, “I wonder how Maniki’s handling it.” She handles it fine, Kare… I only question how you will handle it when I fly once again, the white crooned, using her large white head to nuzzle her rider’s face. Kare almost looked insulted at her white who was the size of a small green. “V’nor and Sovreth haven’t even been gone a turn, Oroth!” Kare scolded. I know it is hurtful to hear, it is so to think as well… but I’m sorry, my love, I am female white who chews firestones and is still fertile so despite the fact that my mate is gone from Pern I must still fly even if you do not wish it. I know love, but it hurts so much…! Can you not choose to fly months from now? I should not feel the need to rise for at most six months my rider, at the earliest two months… but I will fly and be mated again. “I think what she’s trying to tell you, Kare, is that you will have more time but there will be a day when you may be in bed with another man because she will fly and mate.” Kare turned around in a flash to find the Weyrwoman, Quachir, behind her. “I’m sorry, Kare,” the shorter woman replied sheepishly, “I knocked and you didn’t reply so I entered… I was about to speak when I heard Oroth speaking to you.” “I’m not sure I can do it, Chir,” Kare replied. “You’re strong, Kare!” Quachir told her in her soft yet commanding way, causing the white rider to stand up straighter, “I know it’s harder because instead of them leaving you and living on they are dead. But life must go on, mating flights seem to have a knack in that area. Maniki was attached to her former weyrmate at Dawn Sisters Wery but when he broke it off with her she came here and allowed Vazilth to fly once again and… Oh no, M’slin’s not going to be happy about the results of this flight.” Kare looked a bit confused at what Quachir was talking about and the Weyrwoman pointed to the rim of the Weyr where a brown/black dragon and a green rose and fell in time to mating. “That’s Doboroth out there, his rider is A’diar,” Quachir grinned ruefully. “You mean the one that M’slin decked about two months back?” Kare replied. “Ah so you were listening a bit to what was happening outside your weyr,” Quachir kidded gently and then continued on with her lecture, “The point is that V’nor will always have a place in your heart, but you shouldn’t shut it out to another love… If V’nor was alive he’d want you to be happy and find love again.” “You think so?” Kare asked. I think Sovreth would want that as well, as much as it would pain them to see us with somebody else they’d rather see us that way and happy than without anyone and deeply depressed. Kare nodded, knowing well that Quachir had heard the white as well. “I guess your right, Ro,” Kare replied scratching the white’s eyeridge that she had offered for comfort, “Quachir, I know Ro won’t fly for a few months, she’s not even glowing yet, but would you put her name up on the flight boards for me.” “Certainly, Kare,” Quachir replied with a soft smile, “I’ll do it as soon as I make sure M’slin isn’t trying to get at A’diar… I think he needs his privacy with Maniki, wouldn’t you?” the white rider nodded in reply before Quachir went on, “I think the two of you are looking better already. Why don’t you join M’slin and I at the head table tonight. Talk with your friends whom you’ve been away from for so long, it might make you feel even better.” “I think I’ll do that, Quachir,” Kare replied, “But I think you best find M’slin and hope he’s asleep, your werymate has quite a temper you know.” “Yes I know,” Quachir replied and then winked, “but he’s quite sweet at times though he doesn’t want many to know it.” Kare nodded with a chuckle and returned to looking outside. Vazilth and Doroboth still winged about in the sky finishing off their mating flight. I guess in a few months that will be you with a new mate. Do not worry, I will only let the second best catch me. Second best? Yes, as you know Sovreth and V’nor were the best so who ever catches me will be second best. Silly, Ro!
