    AMATEUR RADIO

I have been in Amateur radio for about 10 years and have got much enjoyment out of it. I have made contacts all over the world (as far as Australia!) and many, many friends It is a great hobby to pass a few hours day or night. There is never a time when there is nobody on air.! See also my

    PACKET RADIO

is the use of the computer for sending and receiving messages and for reading bulletin boards. Sort of corresponds to the Internet except that it is run by amateurs for amateurs and costs nothing. It has, however the disadvantage that it can be slow and unreliable at times as it is only as good as the weakest link and so if some amateur operator decides he has had enough he can just shut down operations and all we know is that we are not getting our msg's anymore.! But generally this does not happen too often and some operators are quite professional. In fact some of the best internet software was written by amateurs, as I understand it. Greg Jones will tell you a lot more about this end of the hobby (Easy basic info - Well done, Greg.!) For more info still visit the TAPR site. (Hi guys, is it true that you people started it all???)

    COMPUTERS

I have three computers. ! I have just upgraded to a pentium 500. I really get great use out of this computer and spend a lot of time at it between word-processing, database, spreadsheet, Internet and now trying out this html-writing.! I have just got a laptop as well for my work. Nice to work by the coal fire in our weather.!

    WOODTURNING

is a new hobby for me but goes back to an old hobby of woodwork. I came across woodturning in the South of France up on top of a mountain in Provence.! Saw it demonstrated and was fascinated. Then the next year I saw a woodturning day advertised and applied for it. An older man "adopted" me and was my monitor/tutor until he died recently.R.I.P. Go raibh maith agat a Mhichl (=thank you Michael) I am still very much a beginner but am getting there..well, sort of...... ! We have recently got permission from Coliste Iognaid Rs to use their school workshop for demonstrations. Our thanks to them (they are my alma mater as well.!) If you go to my index page you will find some of our local Cork woodturning and also some work by our not so local demonstrators during our annual seminas. Alternatively, follow the link below.
