Javier and I met in middle school when we were in the 8th grade. Neither of us could remember the exact details, but somehow, over the course of that year, we became friends. During high school, javier’s social friends were mainly the “alternative” crowd, which consisted of druggies, gothic wannabes, and lost gifted children. It was because of him that I started to hang around with these kids and slowly transform myself into the crazy alternative hipster that I was my sophomore year.
Javier and his brothers threw parties at their mother’s house after most school calendar events. These gatherings were so large and wild that they quickly became dubbed “Sosa parties” and started attracting more diverse groups of people looking for a good time. Soon, no one would want to miss a “Sosa party” because they wouldn’t want to hear about any of the bizarre occurrences, that went on there, second hand. Fortunately, for me, my parents knew Javier and would let me go to his parties as long as I was able to spend the night there, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to attend them (my parents were very restrictive all throughout my pre-college life).
A separate group of friends that Javier and I both closely participated in was a group that we eventually named the Degenerates, which was easier than naming us all individually even though we were only 6 guys. Majority of my extra time was spent with these guys. So, by the end of our Senior year of high school it was time for all of us to go along our different paths, except Javier and I were both going to LSU and planned on rooming together.
We were roommates our whole freshman year of college. We got along well, except we didn’t make many mutual friends….Javier was doing a good job at being a social guy so he met many different people while I would mostly hang around the dorm and make feeble attempts at studying. After the end of the spring semester I had made the decision to transfer out of LSU, and ever since we haven’t had much time to hang out. We still converse on the phone and whenever I’m in town and if he can be convinced to leave the house, we see each other. Usually, though, he never seems interested in doing anything other than hanging out with buddies from LSU.
