70-88 Proxy Server 2.0             

The powerful firewall and caching-content server - Proxy Server is not for beginners . . . IMHO, I would pass TCP/IP (70-59) and IIS 4.0 (70-87) before taking this exam. TCP/IP gives you the foundation of what you are filtering - protocols and ports. Plus an added bonus not currently found on the TCP/IP exam - subnetting questions(!)

 

The security aspects of Proxy Server work with the WWW Service found in IIS. When we configure Proxy Server, we will be using the MMC interface.  Finally, installing IIS is a pre-requisite for Proxy Server so with all this in mind, pass IIS as well before tackling Proxy Server.

Major Topics:

• Understand passive and active caching - how objects are delivered to the client and how to improve client response time
• Local Address Table (LAT) - stored in MSPLAT.TXT. But what about LOCALLAT.TXT? Understand the purpose of each and learn enough about subnetting to determine what IP addresses will be considered local given the IP address and subnet mask.
• Distributed and hierarchical routing - which is better? When do we use each configuration?What script improves client response time? And what about CARP and hashing?
• Troubleshooting connection problems, installation problems, login authentication problems
• Domain and packet filtering - how are they used. (Better use the software because there may be exhibits on this!)
• PPTP and RRAS support - what kind of filters need to be in place to support a VPN? Don't forget RAS Phonebook entries!
• IPX/SPX clients going on the Internet? Sure - but how are they configured?
