A typical ST a boot-up shows desktop icons A and B for the floppy disk drives.  If no external drive is attached, the B drive acts as the internal drive asking for disk swaps between two disks.  The C drive appears if a hard dive is also attached (or the internal hard drive on a MEGA ST).  If the hard drive is partitioned, additional icons are added to represent each partition. Use the INSTALL DEVICES in the OPTIONS drop-down menu to customize all desktop icons.

Accessories on the boot disk will appear in the DESK drop-down, use the CONTROL PANEL accessory to customize colors, mouse and keyboard responses, sounds, and other features.

All desktop icons can be relocated by the drag-and-drop method.

Icon locations are in a grid in all resolutions; low res. is 4 x 4, medium res. is 8 x 4, and high res. is 8 x 8.

The TRASH icon is a file incinerator, it removes all files dropped into it that only a commercial undelete program can restore. The desktop does not have a recycle or restore feature.

To open a drive icon, double click or single click and select OPEN in the FILE drop-down.

There are three file icons represented within the drive window, subdirectories appear as folders, executables appear as cartridges, and all other files are pages with one dog-eared. [as shown]. File arrangements can be customized with the VIEW drop-down, but folders will always be listed first.

Folders or files can be copied to another source with the drag-and drop method. Hold CONTROL or SHIFT to select multiple files, or use the 'box' method with the mouse.  You can drag onto a drive icon or into another open window.  On  TOS versions 1.4 and higher, you can MOVE files by holding CONTROL during the drag.

Call the FILE INFORMATION dialog box by single clicking the file then select FILE INFO in the FILE drop-down.  The file's full pathname is displayed, then a line from which to rename the file. At the bottom of the dialog box, set the attribute to Read-Only for files you do not want to change or prevent accidental deleting.  If a Read-Only file is dropped on the trash can, the file will NOT be deleted.

Another dialog box is the SET PREFERENCES in the OPTIONS drop-down, keep the confirmation boxes set to YES to prevent accidental loss of files.  Below that, the next item is for switching to Medium Resolution. The  High Resolution box is only available if a Multi-Sync monitor is attached.

When changing resolutions, the accessories will be reloaded, so make sure the correct floppy disk is in the drive if not booting from a hard drive.
