CU See Me was initially developed in 1992 by Cornell University under a grant from the National Science Foundation. Subsequently, Cornell entered into a contractual relationship that designated White Pine Software as the master licensee for a commercial release of the product. As a result, there are both freeware and commercial versions of CU SeeMe with varying feature sets and capabilities. Both are available for the Windows and Mac operating systems.

In June, 1998, the Cornell development team left the University to pursue new endeavors. As a result, there is much debate concerning the likelihood of the continued development of CU SeeMe by Cornell. Historically, the freeware product transmitted video only in black and white. However, shortly before the departure of the development team, work was substantially completed on Version 1 of the software, which has the capability to transmit and receive color video. Although this product has not been officially released, it is available on the WWW (see link below).
