A CU-SeeMe Rescue 2/27/98 Friday Afternoon

Update: Janel came home Sunday and she is now recovering.

Friday night I was bored, surfing my favorite reflectors when I came upon something I'd never witnessed before. Janel, a Kent State University reflector regular, had become very ill and fallen from her chair. I at first thought it was a hoax. Fake suicide attempts and murders are not uncommon in popular public reflectors.
The tone of the group remained so serious I started to wonder if maybe Janel was really injured. Quade, a friend of Janel from Holland immediately called her on the telephone to see what had happened. Janel was very disoriented, repeating words, but she told him that a call to the police was not necessary. I then started to doubt the seriousness of her condition again.
My next move was to open up Quade's CU-SeeMe window. I could then see the concern on his face. The regulars in Kent State knew Janel very well and must have sensed something really was wrong. Kim, who lived 50 miles north of Janel decided it was time to call 911.
Kim was the first to call 911. The operator she talked to said that 911 was unable to help. Marc then called 911 from his location. The 911 operator Marc was in contact with easily found Janel's address from her phone number. An ambulance was then sent to Janel's house in Beverly Massachusetts.
A few minutes later we could see the paramedics move the chair in front of Janel's computer and help her off of the floor. They then took her to the emergency room for treatment.

I don't have any information about Janel's present condition. If anyone does please email me so I can post it here. We all wish her a swift and easy recovery. Below is the chat that took place along with screen captures of the participants in the rescue. Feel free to email me comments about CU-SeeMe rescues you have witnessed, or fakes. If they are relevant I'll post them for others to read.

Kent State University Reflector (131.123.5.2) 2/28/98 Friday Night

Quade [0]: Hi Anso!
Quade [0]: Anso, you see what I talked about?

( Janel has fallen out of her chair and can no longer be seen by the people in Kent State University reflector. Now only the top of her chair is visible.)

Marc [69]: try her on audio!
Kim [0]: My pic is frozen... Yours too?
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: I hope she is ok.

( The people of the Kent State reflector still believe that Janel's falling-back might be a prank. )

Marc [72]: what Quade?
Quade [0]: Storm (Kim), can you call for help please! I have her on the phone now!
Marc [73]: address Quade?
Kim [0]: I would love to help, but I can't do much without info.
Quade [0]: Storm (Kim), phone please!

(Quade calls Janel from his home in Holland to find that she is having trouble speaking, and she is disoriented.)

Marc [74]: Address!
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: Where is she Quade? Did she speak to you?
Kim [0]: If anyone is her friend, and can call, go for it, but the rest of us are in the dark.
Marc [75]: Quade we need an address!
Marc [76]: or give me her phone number!
Kim [0]: Quade... you are on your own.... If you are close, get up and go.
Marc [78]: Quade is in Holland!
Marc [79]: I'm the closest!
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: If you people have no feelings get off of here.

(Angus said this because there were people who were on the reflector that were chatting about other things. They didn't understand what was going on. Their chat has been edited out.)

Kim [0]: Do you know her?
Marc [80]: Janel!
Kim [0]: do you know where she lives Marc?
Marc [81]: Quade I need her phone number!
Kim [0]: I'm 50 miles north of Boston.
Marc [82]: ok Kim you are the closest!
Quade [0]: Boston!!!
Kim [0]: So. I don't know who to call.
Marc [83]: can you make the call when we get the number?
Kim [0]: Sure, happy to.
Marc [85]: we have an emergency here!
Kim [0]: So, Quade, tell us where she is, or what number.
Kim [0]: Marc, can you get any idea of location? I'd be happy to get someone there.
Quade [0]: sorry 001 978 *** ****
Marc [87]: I'm trying to Kim!
Marc [88]: She is in the Boston area!
Kim [0]: I dialed that number and got a busy signal.

(A panic starts to set in with the group. They start to realize that it most likely is an emergency situation. What makes it worse is the look on Quade's face. Both hands are on his head, and he seems extremely worried.)

Quade [0]: Kim, I'm on line with her shall I hang up?
Marc [89]: Call 911 Kim and give them the number!
Kim [0]: Seriously, is it time to try 911?
Marc [90]: They will get the address from that!
Kim [0]: Will do.
Marc [91]: Quade is on the phone with her from Holland!
Kim [0]: I have 911 on the phone.
Marc [94]: She is sick.
Quade [0]: Storm, she is sick! She repeats herself!
Marc [95]: OK Quade we are getting help!
Kim [0]: Can you tell me anything about how sick?
Quade [0]: Kim,.. I really can't judge..she can talk though.
Marc [96]: Do you have her address?
Quade [0]: Sorry. No Storm (Kim)!
Kim [0]: You won't believe it, but 911 just hung up on me.
Marc [97]: Quade, what is her phone number?
Kim [0]: They say, call information and find out where the number is.
Marc [99]: I will get it!
Marc [100]: Quade is that a US number?
Kim [0]: Unbelievable conversation with 911. They say they can't help.
Marc [101]: hard to believe.
Kim [0]: Where is the location? I can call locally and try again.
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: Quade has her ICQ number, can that be traced?
Kim [0]: Quade. You gotta tell me more.
Kim [0]: Type what you know.
Quade [0]: Kim, what do you need?
Kim [0]: I need the address, or town.
Quade [0]: Kim, Boston is only thing I know!
Kim [0]: OK, I will try again. Any idea of the real problem?
Quade [0]: Kim, she had a high fever, took something yesterday and now.....

(Marc's daughter types to the group while her dad tries to find out Janel's address through a 911 operator.)

Marc [103]: hey Quade can i get a city my dad is on the phone with 911 and he needs a city.
Kim [0]: OK, hang on.
Quade [0]: At first, she sounds like she's joking with me, but she can hardly speak.
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: Boston Marc.
Quade [0]: and repeating everything.
Marc [104]: Yes, but we need a city or town.
Quade [0]: No, she did not say.
Marc [105]: Quade ask her for her address.
Marc [107]: OK, my dad is going to try 911 again.
Kim [0]: They say it is Beverly Mass.
Marc [108]: Kim. Is that the correct spelling of the town?
Kim [0]: Yes, I think so.
Kim [0]: They are looking up the address.
Kim [0]: The operator is making progress, slowly.
Kim [0]: At least this one is sympathetic.
Kim [0]: OK, sure as hell hope this is not fake, cause an ambulance is on the way.
Kim [0]: 911 called Beverly, they looked up her number and they know her address.
Quade [0]: geez!
Kim [0]: And they are going there.
Kim [0]: We'll see what happens in the cam.
Kim [0]: If someone is faking, I'm gonna kill them.
Quade [0]: Kim, I hope she's not.
Marc [109]: This is real Kim!
Marc [110]: Don't worry!
Kim [0]: But, we have to assume this is real.
Marc [111]: We know her well enough to not think that she is anything but sick.
Kim [0]: Well, let's watch, cause they (the paramedics) are going there.
Kim [0]: Probably 5 minutes.
Kim [0]: Is she prone to seizures?
Kim [0]: My local 911 needs a letter to the editor.... such assholes.
Kim [0]: You can't believe the attitude from the bitch, she was telling ME I was hyper.
Kim [0]: I want to watch Janel's place, but after we see some people, I'm gonna raise hell.
Kim [0]: Assuming that rescue will force their way in.
Kim [0]: I still have her pic well.
Kim [0]: Marc, this is real, huh?
Kim [0]: You know, cyber is cyber, but life is life... this better not be a joke.
Kim [0]: Quade: Just confirming, the number they are going to is *** ****?
Quade [0]: Yes Kim.
Mitch [0]: What area code?
Kim [0]: 978
Kim [0]: Beverly Massachusetts.
Quade [0]: Yes Kim.
Mitch [0]: I hope she is ok.
Kim [0]: Shouldn't be long.
Kim [0]: Relax Quade... we're doing all in our power...that's all we can do.
Quade [0]: Kim, I hope this is not fake though. When I asked her if she needed any help, she replied no and said no police please.
Quade [0]: thanks for 911 Kim.
Kim [0]: I'm trying to follow up with 911 now.
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: I hope she is ok, Quade said something about a high fever.
Kim [0]: does anyone have good video of her?

( The dark pants of someone can be seen in front of the camera. The chair has been moved. )

Marc [114]: Someone is at Janel's house I can see them.
Marc [115]: Good job guys.
Elle [0]: I have a good pic.
Kim [0]: I can't see.
Quade [0]: Yes something is moving there!
Elle [0]: There is someone.
Quade [0]: Yes. The chair is moved aside.
Kim [0]: I'm on the phone with 911 now.
Elle [0]: Getting darker now, looked like an officer was there, or paramedics perhaps.
Angus@ATLANTA [0]: I have a real clear pic of her room Kim.

(Now the paramedic can be made out clearly, with gloves on and holding something. He waves to the people online. )

Kim [0]: So, help is there?
Quade [0]: Oh please.
Elle [0]: Looks to be so. Yes Kim.
Kim [0]: 911 tells me they are there, she is conscious, but disoriented.
Kim [0]: This is amazing.
Kim [0]: They are very thankful to all.
Quade [0]: Kim, .yes I was looking for that word...disoriented. (Quade is from Holland.)
Kim [0]: So, Quade... we did it.
Kim [0]: She is helped.
