Watch and Pray

Luke 12:36

Luke 12:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always , that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass , and to stand before the Son of man

This is obviously an antitypical verse from the number of antitypical words:

always - antitype

stand - type and antitype

shall come to pass - antitype

I realized, as I meditated on this that Jesus actually acted out these verses when he prayed in the Garden! First, Jesus prayed that He might escape the hour. This is the typical fulfillment of "escaping all things that shall come to pass".

Mark 14:35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; takeaway this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Praise God that Jesus loved us enough to finish the Father's work!! He loved us enough to be led by the Spirit, not the flesh, even to the point of dying on a cross! He loved us enough to not just do the Father's will but FINISH THE FATHER'S WORK! Oh, the height and depth and breadth of God's love for us!

In the Garden, Jesus also prayed that his works would stand before the Father and that He would be glorified. This is the typical fulfillment of praying "that you will stand before the Son of Man" that Jesus spoke of in Luke 12:36. From previous lessons, we know our works will be tried by fire on Resurrection Day and the glory of our resurrection will be according to what we have done. Just as Jesus prayed that his works would stand the refining fire of God's glory and that he would be glorified (resurrected) by theFather, so we must pray that our works shall stand the refiners fire, that we will be able to stand at the full revealing of God's glory and that we will be resurrected when the Son of Man appears.

John 17:1 ¶These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Jesus is asking to be resurrected.

John 17:4-54 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

In these two verses, Jesus is telling the Father He has completed the work the Father gave him to do, therefore, Jesus believes his works shall stand and He shall be resurrected. When the glory of God is fully revealed on the Day of the Lord, theResurrection will occur. When Jesus is praying to the Father in John17:5 to glorify him, he is actually praying for the Father to resurrect him! I realize this might blow some of our religious circuits, but we must understand that there was no guarantee that God would resurrect Jesus. After all, why would Jesus be praying for theFather to glorify him if He knew already He would be resurrected? According to the word of God, Jesus was DECLARED to be the Son of God according to the spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead!(Romans 1) When God used Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead, it was practice for his own resurrection! In fact, the word tells us that Lazarus resurrection was to bring glory to Jesus for his resurrection. See John 11:4.

What does it mean to "pray to stand before the Son of Man"? It means to pray that our works will stand the test of fire that will occur when God's glory is fully revealed. This is exactly what Jesus did when he prayed in John 17:4-5. He was praying that the works theFather gave him to do that He had completed would stand before the Father and result in a glorious resurrection!
