A Common Mistake

5/30/97

Ahh, Math class. What an invigorating way to start a day. Especially in a stuffy, hot room.

Well, my math teacher presented a math problem for us to solve. Since the word "alone" strikes frear in the hearts of all conform-minded, self-conscious teenagers, my class decided to work together. Everyone put their heads together (the first person that goes 'that must've hurt' will be shot on the premesis), thought hard, pooled our collective genius together, and produced an answer.

Of course, we all agreed on the wrong answer.

My friend looked up and sighed. "Well," he said, "At one point everyone agreed that the world was flat."

Then my entire class's attention shifted to see my teacher's reaction. We all sought the wisdom of our the wise, enlightened, been-to-college, responsible-for-our-education teacher.

"Yes," she said, "But that was before they invented the television."
