Backstreet Secrets

CHAPTER 15

"I hope you know what you're doing." Nick said, putting his foot on the first rung of the ladder.

"No more than you do... We've just gotta try something."

Nick sighed and put his other foot on the ladder, stabilizing himself. "This better work."

He saw Lauren's foot go up and soon followed her. They had climbed about 10 rungs when Nick, who had been looking straight ahead, raised his head.

"Lauren?"

"Yeah?"

"If we ever find ourselves ever going up a ladder again and you wear a dress like you do today, you might wanna consider letting me go first."

"What are you talking about?"

"Let's just say you should be thankful it's dark in here, but still I can catch a glimpse of you."

"A glimpse of -" Then she realized. "Look somewhere else! You couldn't have told me that before I got on the ladder?"

"I hadn't thought of it. I'm not gonna look, I swear."

"You better."

They continued going up the ladder for a while. They proceeded slowly, because they knew that falling down was not an option. A simple mistake could send them both down the shaft, to their deaths.

"Are we nuts here?" Lauren asked.

"You are. You made us get here. There was no other way though. We won't fall."

"But what if the ladder is in the same conditions as the stairs?"

"Just what I needed to hear, Lauren." Nick said with a harsh tone.

"Don't look up, but there's another elevator door a few steps ahead. We'll get out there."

"Fine by me."
