They climbed up the stairs, slowly.

"This is a weird staircase." Lauren commented. "There is nothing but stairs behind the door. It's not a room with stairs in it. It's a room that IS stairs."

"You'd never seen something like that before?"

"Only in movies. It was like the stairs that led to the attic or something like that."

"Lauren... Maybe it is the attic we're going in. Look, there's another door at the end of the stairway."

"If it's really the attic we're going in, we're not getting out that way. It won't lead outside."

"I know," Nick sighed. "But let's see what it really is before giving up, okay?" He reached the top of the stairs and put his hand on the knob of the door. "Oh, I don't want you to get your hopes up, but this is a metal door."

"So?"

"So? It must lead outside!"

"Are you sure?"

"No, that's why I told you that I didn't want you to get your hopes up."

"You didn't get my hopes up, but I'm running out of patience. Open the door!"

Nick did as she told him and opened the door.
