High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is one of the leading causes of doctor visits in America today. Perhaps if more people knew how to avoid this problem, they wouldn't have to worry so much about it.
Many things can cause hypertension. Many researchers think there is a genetic link. However, even if your family does have a history of high blood pressure, you can help keep it from becoming a major problem.
High sodium levels in your blood can aggrivate already high blood pressure. Five to ten percent of Americans are considered "sodium sensitive", meaning that their blood pressure responds directly to the amount of sodium in their blood. They still can, and actually need to, consume at least 500 milligrams of sodium a day, but 2400 milligrams should be their limit. Some researchers believe that hypertension is related to other heart-damaging activities, such as smoking or consuming a lot of cholesterol. It is not known for sure whether these things contribute to rising blood pressure, but they are best to avoid nevertheless.
Those susceptible to high blood pressure should avoid many prescription and over-the-counter medicines. One frequently used drug to avoid is ibuprofen. A doctor can give you a complete list.
As with many medical problems, exercise can help prevent and/or treat hypertension. A basic fitness routine can lower stress, a factor in high blood pressure, as well as lowering blood pressure in more direct ways. Bicycling, jogging or walking, cross country skiing, and canoeing are all considered excellent sports for stress relief.
Having high blood pressure puts you at risk for a multitude of health problems, including the dreaded heart attack, one of America's number one killers. It can also cause headaches and complications during preganancy. High blood pressure is a very pressing problem in America today, but one that's relatively easy to control.
