June - August 1997
But I am running too far ahead, so I will back track a little and try and fill in the gaps:
This whole thing started many years ago (no, I wont be starting that
far back!)when Chris and I were newlyweds....the wonderful dream of
living on a farm! Well many years passed, the children arrived but the
dream never died, it was just put on hold for a decade or so.
The children had become so used to me saying "one day we'll own a
farm" that they soon ignored it or would snort derisively (typical!)
Anyway to cut a very long story short it was in June or July this year
that we finally found ourselves in a position to try once again to make
our dream come true. We spent several weeks scouring the newspapers, making
umpteen calls to Real Estate agents (there must be more than a few Fake
Estate agents around if the "Real" ones have to advertise themselves
as such!But I digress...)
Towards the end of July we took yet another trip out of Auckland to view
yet another prospective abode, so far all the ones we had seen were too
small, too big, too hilly, too flat and swampy or just too expensive (mostly
the latter!)
We arrived in Waiuku, a small rural community approx. 40 minutes south
of Auckland for our appointment with the Estate agent. We followed him
out of town and into the country, passed rolling green hills and cattle
grazing contentedly. We were all "Ohh-ing" and "ahh-ing"
at each new vista, our eyes darting from one side of the road to the other,
in fact our attention was so focused on the scenery that we almost rear-ended
the agent who had stopped just ahead!
He got out of his car and said that he would show us the sheds of the property
first, then take us up to the homestead. We all agreed that this was a
good idea, so we set off.
We drove passed a small pond with a few ducks gliding lazily on the
surface of the still water... what a sight! Despite the day being cold
and grey, we were captivated by everything we saw that day.
After looking at the sheds we set off for the house. It was unassuming
yet when we stepped inside it felt like coming home.
