I've travelled the world twice over,
Met the famous: saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners,
I've been where no one's been before,
Learned secrets from writers and cooks
All with one library ticket
To the wondeful world of books.

coverSkyscraper : The Making of a Building
Karl Sabbagh

As an architect, I can recommend this book to anybody involved or is interested in the construction industry. If you want to get a picture of how a skyscraper - Worldwide Plaza - is put together by fast-track in New York City today, as seen through the eyes of the various parties involved, this is excellent. Definitely a must-read for project managers and developers. A book like this is really hard to come by.

coverJohn Le Carre : Three Complete Novels : Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy/The Honourable Schoolboy/Smiley's People
John Le Carre

My favourite Le Carre novels, apart from The Little Drummer Girl, would have to be Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People. George Smiley, spy-master, comes out of lonely retirement to do battle with his two worst enemies: a traitorous mole in the British intelligence who is destroying the service from inside out and his counter-part in Moscow, the cunning KGB head code-named Karla. Cold, gritty and realistic stories without a hint of the glamour and glory of 007. Catch the magnificent videos from the BBC too, with Sir Alec Guiness as Smiley!

cover Riding the Iron Rooster - By Train Through China
Paul Theroux

This is an extremely entertaining and humourous book from a cynical old American travel writer who criss-crossed China by rickety and overcrowded trains in the 1980s. You do not have to agree with everything he says in order to enjoy the ride. (Take it from a Chinese Malaysian!) Theroux waded into the masses and came out with the perfect guide for anyone who wants to understand China a little better!

cover Life and Death in Shanghai
Nien Cheng

Another book about China, this time seen through the eyes of a Chinese woman who was imprisoned, suffered terribly and lost her only daughter during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Nien Cheng was under severe political pressure to confess to spying for her foreign employer, but resisted to the very end. A truly shocking account of life and death when society goes crazy.

Wordpower - An Illustrated Dictionary of Vital Words
Edward De Bono

De Bono goes through a list of 265 specialised words and phrases and explains their precise meaning in modern usage. What do you think of, for instance, when you come across the words cybernetics, dialectic, endemic and esoteric? What is the difference between perimeter and parameter, lag-time and lead-time, a cluster and a constellation? A great read to improve your vocabulary and understanding of systems and concepts!

cover All Creatures Great and Small
James Herriot

All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All are the titles of four of Herriot's books about the life of two veterinarians in the hills and dales of Yorkshire. Truly hilarious stories about encounters with horses, bulls, pigs, sheep, dogs, etc and the farmers who reared them. Heartwarming is the word!

cover A Bridge Too Far
Cornelius Ryan

In September 1944, a spectacular Allied airborne invasion ended in disaster when it attempted to take a series of bridges in Holland without realizing that the Germans had moved two panzer divisions into the area. Nobody documented combat with as much passion as Ryan. In the process of writing this book, he interviewed hundreds of the actual participants - American, British, German, Dutch and Polish - soldiers and civilians alike - and every incident was double-checked for accuracy. The result is a highly-readable historical record of a major battle of the Second World War. Read Ryan's other books too: The Longest Day (the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944) and The Last Battle (the fall of Berlin in 1945).

cover A Boy Named Goo
Goo Goo Dolls

This is a rock album that I never get tired of listening to. I like all the songs on the CD, which seldom happens. The lead-singer has a great voice and the lyrics are very meaningful. The most widely-played song in the album is Name. A couple of other songs from the group were featured in the movies Twister and Batman and Robin.

cover Batman Forever
Original Soundtrack

Soundtracks are a great way to try new bands - well, maybe not new, but bands you may not have come across. A lot of these groups are not heard on Asian radio, for a start. This album has one of the best selections, imho! My favourite picks:
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - U2
One Time Too Many - PJ Harvey
Kiss From A Rose - Seal
Nobody Lives Without Love - Eddi Reader
Smash It Up - The Offspring
The Riddler - Method Man
The Passenger - Michael Hutchence
Crossing the River - The Devlins

cover The Saint
Original Soundtrack

Try this soundtrack for an introduction to techno bands. The following are really good:
The Saint Theme - Orbital
6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps (Nellee Hooper Edit)
Pearl's Girl - Underworld
Out Of My Mind - Duran Duran
Dead Man Walking - David Bowie
