SHAGUIR

PROGRAMME NOTES OF THE ELECTROACOUSTIC AND COMPUTER MUSIC PIECE by MARTíN FUMAROLA

SHAGUIR

Shaguir is a word that was used in the old Egypt with mystical, quasi-religious, magical, concealed, connotations. It was a word mentioned in rituals and ceremonies in order to achieve the wealth, the improvement, the change, the self-knowledge, the initiation to a different life.

For the composer, most or all pieces produced with Max have a well-noticeable similarity in the general musical result. My challenge both as a composer and as a programmer was to produce a piece with Max but that "it doesn't sound like produced with Max".

Several Max patches were programmed: for improvising with the mouse, for using algorithmic procedures combined with real time perfomance, for aleatoric pitch generation, etc. The music results of the patches were yuxtaposed manually, after a careful selection.

The timbres and sound materials were produced utilizing a YAMAHA TG-33 tone generator.

"ShaGuir" was produced during January and the beginning of February 1998 in the "Theremin Center for Electroacoustic Music and Multimedia" in Moscow. A grant from the Ministry of Culture of Argentina made possible my trip to Moscow.
