THE SOLUTION
I almost made Athena the killer.Though Athena was capable of shooting arrows, she was not strong enough to strangle Mysta - her beloved employer. The reason Athena took to the woods when Xena left with Laertus was to deliver to her Amazon Sisters proud notice of being Xena's property. Mysta and the Amazons were kindreds.
Aaron was already under the influence of poison. His coughing and paleness. It was only a matter of occasion that he be shot with an arrow. Since his own arrows were used for the job, he was already dead when he was shot.
It would be stupid for Paul to hang about, if he did it. Note: Colleen did not leave her home when Xena brought Laertus to jail and neither did his sister, Gwen. Barnette was unlikely. He had been jailed during the first 20 murders then released.
When Xena took Laertus in, we saw Simon at his shop, Mysta on the road, Helen at the farm. Jerod? Colleen? Gwen? Since Colleen and Paul were working together, that actually excludes Colleen. Paul was set to marry one of Colleen's daughters. The dinars he buried were likely a dowery of some kind. Did he steal it, earn it? We don't know. But, that excludes Paul from killing the daughters. We don't know what the elixir was that Athena witnessed. The kiss was on his cheek, nothing more than a grateful mother-in-law-to-be.
We know Gwen has had ample opportunity to murder. Her husband is gone, her step-mother visits only three times a week. All the "murders" were commited by poisoning first. That allowed the victims to be postmordem targets. Like Simon's wife who never struggled while she was being strangled. Who killed her? Gwen, because she was enjoying an affair with Simon. Maybe Simon shamefully realizes that but has been keeping it to himself. He loves Gwen. Yet, he challenges Xena's arrest of the brothers.
Aaron's wife and child were dragged not carried by "strong-hands" into the barn. Using poison first then a horse and rope, Gwen would have had no problem. Why?
Aaron was spying on Gwen, telling everyone that she was having an affair with Simon. But, that made Simon look guilty for the murder of his wife. No, no, no.Gwen had no love of her step-brother, Paul, who kept company with an enemy of her father, Barnett. What better way to implicate Barnett than the use of poisons? And, Gwen had every reason to desire a simplier easy life. She lived on a small acreage with her son, hubby now gone. She lived just outside her step-mother's massive farm. If Gwen married Simon, she'd want more land.
Jerod, Barnett, Paul and Colleen teamed a long time ago, hunting for the prospector's gold. How well can anyone hide that? Some suspected the Amazons had it. Everyone wanted the gold. But, someone had been digging and hunting by night, someone who knew the lay of the land, someone planning to keep the treasure for themselves.
To achieve her goals, Gwen carefully selected an ally among that group - the insiders club so to speak. Whoever attacked Mysta only meant to scare her. Ten-fingers eliminated Simon as Aaron's chief suspect, pleasing Gwen to no end. She had no love of Barnett. Hence, Jerod - the crafty hunter - made the perfect ally. Mysta got away and told of a "strong-man" in a black cloak.
NOTE: the first house she came to, was Gwen's - the location of the digging. How nice that Laertus was already there and left into the night, alone, to fetch Aaron. Why would Gwen let him leave all alone? She loved Laertus, her full-blood brother.
Because she knew the attacker was Jerod. Perhaps later Laertus caught on. How did he get a brand new sitar? Did Jerod find the gold mine?Yes! The murder of the shaman. His body hung on the tree. The shaman was blessing cursed land, cursed because it contained hidden gold. Again, the location and the possible use of poisons. The bees are an aftereffect for terror. No tracks, crafty hunter who knew the woodland area. Jerod wanted the gold all to himself.
But at the land auction, Paul purchased the Darren's land. He intended to marry and move there, happy as a clam. His love was one of Colleen's daughters. If Paul left Helena, Gwen would be stuck caring for her step-mother. No No No.
With Jerod's help, Gwen planned her timing carefully. She saw Colleen pass by Gwen's home on her way to Helena. What better time to eliminate the daughters and pin the blame on Colleen? Perhaps Jerod mentioned the gold he may have found. Greed does seal a tight criminal bind.
Bodies in a circle were killed by poison, Jerod attended the arrows were afterthought to terrorize people into leaving. But, Aaron arrested him. More favors were needed. In order to shift suspicion from her cohort, Gwen killed Aaron's wife and kid and Gregor who may have seen her and Jerod snooping on Paul's property. Gwen was falling for Jerod's plan of double-tracks, only she may not have realized it.
Reguardless of Gwen's agenda, Xena knew quickly that Laertus was in danger, the next on Jerod concerns. Since Aaron freed Jerod, the hunter was above suspect and capable on removing any, including Gwen, who stood in his greedy way. His double-tracks already pointed to other candidates.
In all likelihood, Gwen would have stopped the killing with Aaron. She and Simon hated the man. And, the town would easilly crucify Paul and Colleen for the murders.
Simon was cleared, Barnett was cleared, Mysta was attacked and presumed cleared, Helena was too scared to leave her own property, Laertus was with Gwen lending mutual allibi when Mysta was attacked, and Jerod was cleared by Aaron who was now dead.
Paul was first to find Aaron's body. Paul was witnessed by his sister Athena - sneeking out at night with Colleen. Mysta already suspected Colleen and expected Xena to come to the same conclusion.
Who murdered?
The answer: Jerod and Gwen
The Motive: The gold and Simon
Method: Poison
And Xena always gets her prey (s)!
