Okay, a friend of mine explained to me that Lady Ice was a song about a prostitute. That wasn't the way I saw it, so I did my own story. If only it could have been put on film... *sigh* The song starts with Nick’s intro. And as that is going on, the camera floats (up close) along a dresser top and mirror over makeup and perfume and hairbrushes (all very nostalgic looking). Then the camera looks into the mirror at the woman the song calls Lady Ice. And there she is putting the finishing touches on her makeup, then she gets up, dons a jacket, and walks out. The street she emerges on is dirty, and walls are damaged, and it is cold. Her breath frosts in the air. As she walks alone in the night (actually near dawn) she remembers fondly fun things she and Simon (of course! He is the singer!) did together. It becomes clear that she is in love. Her memories sometimes get interrupted by things such as signs of fascism, or wanted posters with Simon on them, newspapers saying that the government is looking for the rebel leader - whose identity is unknown. And, once, she passes by a T.V. display in a store front window where the news broadcast is saying that the rebels' second in command has been captured, and a trade has been arranged. And they show Simon’s pic. She recalls hearing the news of his capture, and how devastated she was. Then her thoughts move a little forward in time when she is arguing with the rebels at the rebel headquarters about what to do to get him back... The sky is growing lighter as dawn approaches. People are starting to go out and about heading for work, and she walks easily among them. She approaches a large construction area. It is huge. The news reported that that was where the exchange was to take place, and people are gathering at the fringes to witness history. She joins the crowd, and looks on at the pit. At the other end of the pit, she sees the government forces. They have erected a tent, and are now constructing a hangman’s scaffold. Troops are putting on a show of...whatever...marching around smartly for the crowds benefit and such. And the sky lightens, and the crowd thickens, and news teams set up their equipment. Dawn is near. Then the commander comes out, and at the crack of dawn, a number of prisoners- including Simon stand outside the tent, and the commander shouts through his bullhorn for the rebel leader to show himself. She steps forward. The prisoners begin walking, so she does the same. She knows a lot of them, but Simon is the only one she can see right now. She thinks back to once when they had an argument and she ended it by saying, "If anything goes wrong, you know what to do." Then he says "Well, nothing better go wrong." and they both make up.... And then he is there. Right in front of her. And as they pass, she slips him something, and their eyes lock for what seems like an eternity. Then he is gone, and she continues on, feeling alone, and close to crying. She approaches the tent, and the commander. His eyes are smiling, beady. He is leering. They take custody of her and bind her hands in front of her. Her pride and dignity cant help but make her stand a little taller in circumstances such as these. From the other side, Simon’s face is wooden as he walks away. Over his shoulder, the crowd can see the commander talking to her, then yelling at her. Then he backhands her big time. She falls reeling to the ground. Simon’s face shows rage and you know he heard, even though he still hasn't turned around. The soldiers stand her back up for more of this treatment. Back at the tent, the commander is about to lay into her, when a bullet goes ripping through her torso, wounding the commander as well (though superficially. He is crying like a baby.) As she falls to the ground, she half turns so she can see back across the pit. She feels great pain, and a fear of dying, and a very small bit of relief as she looks at Simon. She can barely see him standing before the rising sun as he lowers the gun SHE slipped him. Tears are running down both his cheeks, and he falls to his knees in grief. The sun shines blindingly behind him and he is the last thing she sees as everything goes white. The End.
