An Irish
Blessing for you!
This
was one of Grandma Stranahan's favorite sayings, and it was on the last
St. Patrick's Day card that she ever sent to me. I decided to make a wall
plaque out of it. I scorched the edges of the card, glued two 1" X 6" pieces
of pine together, cut out a circle 8" in diameter, shaped and sanded them
and then glued the card to it. When that dried, I applied 3 separate coats
of clear varnish to it. I gave it to my mother-in-law, Helen Alice Walsh
Lee for Christmas in 1976. She had it with her, even in the nursing home,
until she died on November 19, 1997. After Helen died, it came home with
us where it now hangs on the bricked wall in my kitchen as a daily reminder
of not one but two lovely ladies with whom I have shared parts of my own
life. You can see their pictures in our family
album. You may read more about my Grandma Stranahan at my hrcreditunion
site and see one of her paintings there and another on my Christmas
Page at CapitalNET .

The song playing "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" was one of Daddy's favorites of all time. I can never hear this song played without seeing him standing in front of the piano at The Wonder Bar, belting out the words, while patrons cried in their drinks. (I spent a good deal of my youth in that or some other bar listening to Daddy sing the old Irish songs and all the Irish-American songs.) I have some pictures around here somewhere of him at the piano singing; I will have to search for them one of these days, so I can scan them for addition to this page at a later date. You may also read some more about Daddy in my story "The Gift" at my hrcreditunion site.
