1940 The constitution of Cuba adopted. Fulgencio Batista elected president.
1948 Carlos Prio Socarras becomes president for four-year term.
1952 Fulgencio Batista seizes power by military force and ousts Prio. Constitutional government ends in Cuba.
1953 Fidel Castro and followers attack Moncada Barracks in Santiago. Attack fails and survivors sentenced to long prison terms
1955 Batista declares amnesty for Castro and other Moncada attackers.
1956 Fidel Castro returns to Cuba and starts guerilla operations against Batista in the Sierra Maestra
1957 Fidelistas launch first successful attak at La Plata in January.
1958 Raul Castro establishes second front in the Sierra Cristal. General strike fails to oust Batista. Government forces routed in rebel counterattack. Batista flees Cuba on New Year's Eve
1959 Rebels take power in Cuba
1960 Cuba reestablishes relations with the Soviet Union and nationalizes North American property on the island
