Chapter Three

Christina sat by the window of her apartment in absolute boredom. She listened to a CD that her sister had bought her. She said it was by some boys about her age, from Oklahoma by the name of Hanson. Since she couldn't do anything much on weekends, no matter how much her sister and her mother tried to entertain her, she usually found her self by the windowsill all by herself listening to whatever her sister brought for her. Her sister kept mentioning how cute the fourteen year old in the band was. Christina just wished she could see them. She wished she could see herself. Or anything for that matter. It was no fun living in a dark world. Knowing that everyone around her could see. A tear rolled down Christina's cheek as she thought of her misery. She always tried to make the best of what she could do. Hear, feel, smell and touch, but it would mean so much to her if one day she could actually see something more than what she saw in her dreams. Christina hadn't been blind all her life. The tragedy happened many years ago when Christina was only five. When her family was on vacation in Miami. Christina and her father were driving back from Burger King when a driver ran a red light. Christina broke her arm and lost her sight, but her father died. Her sister and mother were at the hotel at the time, and as soon as Christina was out of the hospital, her father's body, along with the rest of the family was flown back to Chile for the funeral. Ever since, Christina's life consisted of music and whatever her sister or mother could possibly think of to entertain her. Her sister Monica was really the one who took her places and tried to keep her entertained. Mostly because their mother had gotten so depressed after their father's death that she lost control of her life and became an alcoholic. Also, she was at work most of the time, and would stay out late either working or at some bar, and didn't have any time for her daughters. So usually Monica would take her to a park so she could listen to the children play. So she could listen for a moment to the sound of happiness and not only think of the darkness that she was bound to. Christina sat and listened to the voice of what seemed to be the middle of the three brothers. His voice was so soothing. Since she could not see, she liked to sense vibrations. She could sense the happiness in his voice and it calmed all her nerves. She listened carefully as he sang a ballad that seemed to be calling out to her.

When you have no light to guide you

And no one to walk beside you

I will come to you oh I will come to you

When the night is dark and stormy

You won't have to reach out for me

I will come to you oh I will come to you.

The song telling her that He was there. That God was with her always. She sat and fidgeted with her dress. In the midst of her quietness she heard shrieks coming from outside. She figured that another famous actor or important musician was arriving at the Hyatt which happened to be right across the street from her apartment. She listened more closely and heard a bunch of voices chanting.

"Hanson! Hanson! Hanson!"

The name sounded extremely familiar. Christina thought for a moment and remembered that the CD that she was listening was by that exact group. She sat back and sighed. Just then she heard her door open.

"Hey Monica!"

"Hey Christina, are you hungry, can I get you anything?" Christina thought before she answered. It was strange for her sixteen year old sister to come and offer anything at this hour, after all, it was 3:00 in the afternoon and she had just had lunch half an hour ago.

"Monica?"

"Yeah?"

"Why are you offering me food half an hour after I've eaten lunch. You know I never eat between meals. That's not why you came to talk to me. What do you really want?" Monica chuckled.

"You clever little....Okay...here's the thing. You know that CD I bought you?"

"Uh-huh."

"Well, the guys are staying at the Hyatt-"

"I know, I heard the chanting."

"Yeah...and I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go meet them."

"Are you asking me this because you want to meet them, or because you want me to meet them?" Monica smiled and sat a little closer to her sister taking her hand.

"Girl, if you don't want to go, you don't have to. I just thought it might be fun for you to meet someone famous. And there is a guy that is your age...and cute."

"Oh...like I could really tell if he was cute or not. But sis, for your sake, ok I'll go!" Monica jumped out of her chair and walked to the door.

"Ok, I'll go call mammy and ask her, and if she says yes, I'll come and get you okay?" Christina frowned.

"Like mom would actually care if we went somewhere." Monica sighed.

"You're probably right honey, but if we don't and she comes home to an empty house, she's gonna get really mad."

Christina smiled and did her best impression of a valley girl.

"Okay girlfriend! Like whatever you say!!!" Monica laughed and ran off to call her mother. Christina sat back and waited. Maybe this day wasn't going to be just like any other.
