Sins of the Mother

When you woke alone
in the middle of the night
nightmare cry call,
she was there
to sing to you
her whispering complacent
lullaby.

With a hug and a kiss,
for kissing then was okay,
a good bye wave
she waved to you
not sadly
as the school bus wheels
turned, turned
and rolled away.

And then in the afternoon
for the school day
had simply passed
slipped
softy away
you came home.

Wipe your feet
on the mat
in front of the front door
cause dirt on the floor
was of course
not, shall we say,
accepted in her house.

She loved you
when you called to her.
She was gentle
when the lion roared in the night.
Of course,
whispered softly
when the skinned knee
red and angry
was more then enough
to make you cry
back then.

And she told you she was right
when the hard words
she forwarded
made you
go away
leave little bird
and fly.

In the Arms of the Father

In the warm arms embrace of the father
I lay my head down to rest
and listen carefully
to the rise and fall
of the heart beat
within his chest,
my soul damning sins
are confessed.
Begging him,
for my soul to be saved,
I cry in the night,
shoved harshly away.
Near to him I cry,
"Come for me again."
But the father
has gone,
leaving
just me.
From the arms
of the father
I shiver
on the inside.

Looking Down

It takes to the sky,
the bird
so free
to spread
feathery wings
and soar
high above
ever and always
looking down
on our world
able to see
us.

Storm's Coming

Gray clouds form
in the Eastern sky
and the wind
knocks the shutter
open to the house
on third street
boulevard.
The rain falls,
bleeding in to
windows and walls
crying onto the carpet
of your home.
We weren't ready
for the storm.

Untitled (5-24-98)

Like quicksilver
the storm rolls in
exciting the waves
to crash
deadly, dangerously
on my lone shore.
The wind
speeds up, increasing,
with deadly intensity
about the rocking tide.
I drown
near the water
that I love so much.

Mind your own Bussiness

The wind
steals the words
from my mouth
and takes them
to find them
in a place
they never
should have been.

Baby

He left when she was small
and she cried
for awhile
but he was around
at Birthday and Christmas time
every once in a while
So that was okay.
When he came around
he made her smile
She grew up
and home to her
one day he came
But by then
she didn't
have a smile
for him left.

Come Play

It was a nice day yesterday
hot and humid
and I simply wore myself out
chasing around trying
to catch a cloud
I went strait home
and fell asleep
before I caught a glimpse
of the stars.

Runaway

The sun hasn't yet set
as she leaves
the party
in her black grieving dress
that's a little too short
and a little too tight
Turning away
from the friends
of the family
To the place
not wholly unafraid
she approaches the casket
on the hill.
She lays a hand
soft, sweet, and nice
on the dirt for one last time
Walking to the other side
She's run away from home.

So Tired

I'm tired Mommy,
all I want to do
is go away
lay down and sleep.
The bed in the next room
is soft and nice
a perfect place
to lay down
and rest.
But I'm afraid
of the dark
to be alone in the next room.
So I'll sit up all night
and just stay awake.

Lullaby

Tell me a story Daddy,
make it nice and long
So it'll fallow
me down into
sleep and dreams
and chase the nightmare
voices far away
and leave me
for a night
in silence
and in peace

Lord is my Shepherd

He read the Bible
every day
since a little child
little lamb
waiting for his shepherd
on bended knee
to lead him to the still waters
and the lush green grass
he needed
Starving and weeping
he died
next to paradise
on the other side
of the ridge

We Watch the Stars

The wind
rub’s his hands
over your body
like a comfortable
stranger
as you
lay down upon
the earth
and gaze
at the stars

Raw earth
fills my nose
as I come
to sit near
you
and the grass
tickles my cheek
as I lay
my head down
to rest

Together
we watch
the stars

Prayer to a Fallen Star

Isn’t it strange
how the stars
seem miles
upon miles
so close
yet so far away
gazing into
the night
sky

America

The girl next door
is shooting up
with big brother Joseph
And momma’s in the kitchen
screaming at dad.
Little sister’s
tummy is growling
as she sucks her thumb
curled in a ball
at the foot
of Grandma’s bed.
Sirens are shrieking
up and down the street
and the shadow of a gun
reflects off Baby’s wall.
Neighbor across the street
has a bun
in the oven
and in fourteen and a half years
there’ll be another one
on the way
if she’s a girl.
Dealer on the corner’s
making his rounds,
and up the street
the last nuclear family structure
is on its last legs
about ready to finally
crumble and fall.
Here we are
about to lose the battle
as the armored tank
falls apart
as it grinds to a halt
in front of a brick wall
Resurrected
by businessmen
to keep the bad company out
hundreds of years
before

Night

The sun sets in the west
leaving a trail of fire in its wake
that shoots across the sky
burning the clouds
making a path for the stars.

Sleep, Sleep,
Oh blessed Sleep
O sleep of dream
What a miracle
it is

and forsake the dark.

Home

I stare at it,
and the clock on the wall
hasn't changed.
But on the outside,
the minutes have
melted into hours
slipped into days.
And the sun
will rise and set
just the same,
even though the windows
are wide shut.

House that Jack Built

We curl in front of the fire
nice and warm
safe and comfortable
in the house that Jack built.
The storm rolls over
out side
and clouds form.
But the fire
is beautiful.
The fire is safe.
So we stay
in the house that Jack built
and yes,
the roof leaks
And the doors
won't stay
forever locked.
But for now
It's a safe place.
The house that Jack built
for us.

Rachel

The wind blows
her fair hair
in her face
and with a callused hand
she reaches up
to brush it aside
Looking around
She sees her life
for perhaps
the first time
And now she's discovered
she doesn't quite like
what's out there
for her to see
But the sun's already setting
so she closes
the screen door
and goes on back inside

Heaven's a Long Way From Home

I know
I can't live
with out you
And I know
I can't be alone
But I know
you can't live
forever
Yet, heaven's
a long way
from home.

My truth
awaits in your lie
as I wake
with the dawn
of your sun
And I walk
through the wide
open you come
And heaven's
a long way
from home.

The answers
are taking too long
Alone in the dark
I sigh
And I wait
for you softly
the pain
in my cry
'Cause heaven's
a long way
from home.
