West Indian Manatee

I
photographed this endangered mammal in 1998 at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa,
Florida. Manatees are exceedingly
gentle and inoffensive.
Unfortunately, their easy-going demeanor puts them in harm’s way
when boats enter their habitat.
Most manatee deaths can be attributed to encounters with boats. In addition, like many endangered
species, humans are degrading their habitat with development and pollution.
We support manatee conservation efforts with donations to various wildlife
groups.
