Like most writers, I spent many years doing other things "for a living." I've been an economist, a graduate student, a journalist, an art historian, a bartender, an artist's model, a political consultant, and assistant to an art dealer. I've had a lot of fun, some frustration, but always I've continued to write. Newspaper articles, journal articles, short stories, fiction--writing them kept me sharp and happy.

I remember the first time I ever introduced myself to someone as a writer. It was hard to say, especially before I was first published. I felt silly discussing stories that only I had seen! Then the Library of Virginia published my article about the New Deal's program to put art into federal post offices. Talk about a breakthrough! I wanted to frame the $100 they paid me for the story but I was poor and needed the money. That's how it goes with artists.

I picked up odd jobs, and along the way I found steady work with several newspapers. Through my assignments I got to meet and befriend other artists, including photographers, designers, musicians, and entrepreneurs. I loved telling their stories, so interesting and profoundly inspiring.
