I hadn't heard this song before seeing it live. It was well worth the wait. His performance sent chills shooting through every part of me. He seemed to be singing to the whole city, not just the club.
"Can you tell me where are we headin', Lincoln County Road or Armageddon?"--with the band emphasizing the end of that line with Bob it seemed they were all trying desperately to get something across to us, even though I still haven't figured out just what this song is about.
The performance had an "other-worldly" quality to it that's indescribable. Compare the feel of "Desire" to all of Bob's other albums and maybe you'll get an idea what I mean. It felt like we were being called to action during that song, but to do what? "How long must I keep my eyes glued to the door?" Almost three years later I listen to a tape of the show and still get left with a hopeful kind of feeling, even though it's still unclear what that hope is for.
