Welcome To The Snack Shack!!

God's Word is compared to food all throughout the Bible. The reason: as humans we need food to survive, and as Christians we need God's Word to survive. Not only do we need food, but it's something we desire. Right? Well, God's Word should be something we desire too. It is full of nutrients that we need and flavor that can be compared to the best of physical food that's out there! We're talking gourmet here! :)
Now, along with the fried chicken and tri-tip...the ice cream and pie...and all those foods we put on our list of "favorites", are those vegetables like spinach and broccoli...or whatever it is that you eat only because you have to!
It's the same way with our Spiritual food, God's Word. There are those verses and stories that we have no problem reading and applying them to our lives (you know, those ones that promise blessings...), and then there's those verses that don't taste quite as good, those ones that are hard to understand or make you feel convicted. Those "vegetables" are just as important to read and apply to your life. We need them to survive!
So, take a few minutes and check out these "snacks" from God's Word. Remember, we don't live on bread alone...physical food is great, but we need God's Word, our spiritual food, too! Every word that comes from the mouth of God.... that's real food!

DEVOTIONALS

Devotional 1

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." ~Matthew 7:1

It’s really easy to judge someone when he/she doesn’t live up to your expectations of how you think a Christian should act. It’s also really easy to judge people who aren’t Christians. In fact, it’s simple to judge just about anyone. The faults of everyone else are not in the least bit difficult to recognize…or point out. An old cliché comes to mind when I think about this verse. “What goes around comes around”. Did you know that when you judge someone you are planting a seed of judgment that will multiply and produce more and more seeds that can easily turn around and point judgment back at you?

When the adulteress was brought to Jesus for condemnation, what did Jesus say? He told those who had gathered around that anyone who had no sin in his life could throw the first stone at her. Guess what…no one was able to throw a stone at the lady, so she was set free with Jesus’ words “go and sin no more”. No one could judge her because they were all guilty of sin too. A few verses down from our key-verse for this devotional talks about how we should remove the plank from our own eyes before we can possibly see well enough to take the speck of dust out of someone else’s eye. Clearly, we are not supposed to judge others. Judgment will only bring judgment back on you. And besides, who are we to judge others if we have sin too?? Be warned, if you are quick to pass judgment on another person, you will also be judged, and oftentimes the judgment will be greater by the time it gets back to you. Take a lesson from this verse, and leave judgment in the hands of the only one who is in the position to do so…God. After-all, we all fall short of God’s glory. Instead of judging, try praying for the person and if you must, point out their sins in love and care. But always remember, once a seed of judgment (as well as any other type of seed) is planted, it will begin to grow and multiply, and you will no longer be able to contain it. What kind of seeds do you want to be known for producing? Probably not judgmental ones….I want to be known for planting seeds of love and care and hope…seeds of life. :)

Devotional 2

"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose." ~Philippians 2:1,2

This verse is pretty self-explanatory. Do you have any encouragement from being united with Christ? I know I do. A lot of encouragement, in fact. This verse tells us that we need to share that encouragement…that comfort that Christ gives us with others. If you feel encouraged because of Christ, make someone else feel encouraged too…and then show the person what your source of encouragement is. I think this verse gives us the basics of how to witness. Reach others by showing them what Christ has done for you. Witness by being “Christ-like” and offering encouragement and love to those around you.

You don’t have to preach at someone to be a witness. All you have to do is share the joy…the love…the peace…the encouragement…the comfort…the grace that Christ gave you with those around you. Be “Christ-like” and reach out to your friends…to the people that you meet on the street…to all those that you come into contact with. Reach them by sharing that love Christ reached you with. If you have received encouragement, pass it on. Encourage those around you…show them the Jesus that you know and love, the Jesus that works in your life and cares so much for His children. Don’t keep it to yourself…share the wealth! :)

Devotional 3

"Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did." ~1 John 2:6

“What Would Jesus Do?” The cliché is over-used, but the actual idea is not used enough. We’ve all heard it, but what does the quote really mean? Did you know that we as Christians are representatives of Christ? What happens if you are swearing, gossiping, stealing, doing drugs, lying, etc.? What kind of a representative of a Holy and Righteous God are you being to those around you? If we say we are followers of Christ, then we need to walk, talk, act, react, etc., like Jesus would if He were in our place? So, in all things, be sure to ask yourself “What Would Jesus Do?” before you act.

But how do you know what Jesus would do? Well, what DID Jesus do?? We have four books of the Bible that are devoted to telling us all about the life of Christ. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are all good books to consult when you want to know what Jesus would do. Also, the more time you spend in prayer, the more familiar you will become of Christ’s ways and will. He will guide you and show you what to do. Just ask Him!

Remember, people will know you by the things you do. If you are going to claim that you are a Christian, then it is important that you act like one! If you don’t, you may end up turning people away from God instead of bringing them to God. Now, I’m not saying that you have to be perfect, of course only God is perfect! But you must try, you have to do your best. And you have to get back up when you fall. Jesus no longer lives on this earth, but He lives in US, His followers. It’s up to us to show the world who Jesus is. It’s up to us to walk as Jesus did.

I know this isn’t the poetry section, but I thought I’d share one of the first poems I wrote, since it goes well with this devotional.

What Would Jesus Do?

The words slip out
Too quick to consider
The effect they could have
To make one bitter
And I know I've once again failed
To give God all control
And once more my own will has prevailed
And I've lost sight of my goal

To be like Jesus
To act as he would
To follow his ways
Think through like I should
I want to show His light
In all that I do
If I'd remember this question
"What Would Jesus Do?"

My life's an example
For all to see
Of a Christian person
With "different" beliefs
But I still stumble
And sometimes go astray
And I often forget my choice
To follow all God's ways

Still, I know He forgives and forgets
If I turn my life around
And get back on track
Remembering I'm homeward bound
No one is perfect
But we must strive
To act in all situations
With this motto in mind
"What Would Jesus Do?"

Daily Bread

An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but what about a Proverb a day? What's the importance of reading scripture daily, you might ask. Well, daily reading of God's Word is like eating daily. Do you like to eat daily? I sure do!
When you starve yourself of God's Word and don't take the time to read and study it every day, it's kind of like starving your physical body: you become a little weaker...you get kind of irritated and angry easily...you lose out on nutrients that you need...it's just not very comfortable, and besides, it's not very much fun!
Proverbs is a good book to read a chapter of of every day. It has 31 chapters, and can be read in a month. The wisdom that is offered in these proverbs are written by Soloman, the wisest person (well, except for Jesus) who ever lived. But they are inspired by God. I guarantee that they will help you! But of course, you can't just read them, you have to actually use them for them to work. :)
(Note: Proverbs are good...but they aren't the only thing you should read each day. Pick a verse or section of verses from another book of the Bible to read also for best results.)

The Fruit Bowl

In Galations 5:22,23 we find a listing of the Fruit of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. We're told in God's Word that people will know us by our fruit. That's how they will be able to tell if we are followers and servants of Christ. The Bible also tells us that God will cut off the branches that don't bear good fruit! Yikes! This fruit thing is pretty important, isn't it?!
Well, here we will feature one of these "fruits" in each issue, starting with the first fruit mentioned: Love. Do you think that the "fruit" you bear is good? Do you think that people are able to tell that you are a Christian by the way that you act or respond in different situations?
Let's take a look at this issue's featured fruit...

PEACE

In today’s world, everyone is looking for peace. World peace, peace of mind, peace and quiet, peace that makes sense of all the confusion associated with life. The sad thing is that there are so many things out there that claim to bring “peace”, but instead are deceptive tools of the devil. The definition of peace has been molded to fit the views and ideas of just about anyone who is searching or believes they have found what they are looking for. For something so much in demand, true peace is found by very few people. And even fewer people have learned to live in that peace the way Galatians tells us to.

The interesting thing is that most people who desire peace still want their own way in everything. (Who doesn’t want their own way?!) But one major part of living in peace is that you are willing to back off and listen to the other person. Now, I’m not saying that you should let everyone walk all over you, but if you want fullness of peace, you have to learn to let go sometimes and not always feel the need to “be right” or prove your point. You have to trust that God is ultimately in control, and then put things into perspective. You have to recognize petty things for what they are and not let them rob you of your joy, your peace, your victory.

Peace is something that you must seek (1 Peter 3:11), you must pray for it. It doesn’t come naturally, and it usually doesn’t come instantly either. When you give ALL your concerns and needs to God and you make God’s goal your goal, then He will reward you with peace that no one can take away from you. The other things I want to point out is that peace IS a blessing from God, it’s not something that you can obtain on your own. Many people think that they can find peace by searching for it with their own hearts and minds. But the only way that will happen is if God is living INSIDE your heart and mind. Otherwise, the only peace you’ll find is the “fools gold” kind, and that’s a cheap substitute for what God can give.

Psalms 37:37 says “There is a future for the man of peace”. When you live in peace, you will find that it affects not only yourself, but also those around you. Your peace will be evident to others, which will be a testimony for God. Also, it will help shape your future. Decisions that you make in clear-thinking will reflect the peace of mind that you had at the time. Then, there are the choices that you make in a peaceful spirit towards others… Either way, peace definitely plays a part in the way your future turns out.

John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hears be troubled and do not be afraid. “ The main thing that I want to say about this verse is that peace takes away from fear, and fear takes away from peace. Jesus said that HIS peace makes it so that your heart won’t be troubled and so you won’t be afraid. It also confirms what I said earlier about how God’s peace is not the same as the kind that the world gives.

Did you know that the peace of God is not something that you have to understand to possess? In fact, Philippians 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. So, God’s peace, even though we can’t understand it, guards and protects our hearts and minds. The verse before this one talks about how you don’t have to worry or be anxious about things, but that you just have to submit your requests to God and then trust that He will take care of things. It’s that peace that takes care of you and keeps you from worrying while God works in your life and meets your needs.

Colossians 3:15 tells us that we should let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, since as members of one body we are called to peace. And Romans 12:18 says “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”. In other words, don’t be responsible for causing unnecessary arguments or fights. If you have the choice, to either let things go or start an argument, be the bigger person and keep things peaceful.

It’s God’s will that you not only have peace, but that you also live in peace. Galatians tells us that there are fruit of the Spirit and fruit of the flesh. It also says that the person who sows seeds in the flesh will reap corruption, and the person who sows seeds to the Spirit will reap life everlasting. Peace is a very important fruit of the Spirit, and it should be evident in your life. Now that we’ve explored what peace is and how we can use it, we can understand the true value that this fruit of the Spirit has for and in our lives.
