He Walked A Mile

You’ve probably heard someone declare at one point or another, “you just don’t understand unless you’ve walked a mile in my shoes”. This phrase is pretty self-explanatory. Basically, it means that unless you have gone through what someone else has, you can’t understand their personal struggles. There are times in our lives when we feel like nobody can understand the pain and struggles we go through. We, too, may say or think that nobody understands until they have walked a mile in our shoes.

Sadly, some of us picture God as somebody who just wouldn’t understand. God doesn’t just sit up in the heavens, watching the earth from afar. He is alive and active in this world. In fact, He came down to this earth in the form of flesh and blood: a little baby named Jesus. He didn’t just come for a quick visit either, He stayed for 33 years.

Jesus was fully God and fully man, all combined together in one. He was a baby, a kid, a teen (like you and I), and an adult. He was a friend, a teacher, and the Savior. He wasn’t immune from all the everyday drudgery. He felt sorrow and pain, love and great joy. He faced trials and temptations. He had to make choices on His own. He was never forced to do the Father’s will. And when He sacrificed His life on the cross, He must have felt loneliness. He was all alone in a cold, dark world that hated Him so much as to kill Him. Betrayed by His very best friends, forsaken by God, His s Father. Yep, I would say that Jesus tasted of the good and bad aspects of human life. He has been through it all, and triumphed over it all, never sinning once.

Pretty interesting, isn’t it, when we look at Jesus’ life on earth in this light? Through His life here on earth, Jesus can relate to us all, no matter what walk of life we come from. Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun”. What Jesus went through 2000 years ago can relate directly to you now. He knows the struggles of being human. He knows the pain you feel. He’s already been there, done that, got the scars to prove it. If you are going through a struggle, call upon Jesus. He cares about you, and wants to help you through your troubles. He can give you the strength to go on. He’s already “walked a mile in your shoes”, and He’ll walk that same road again with you now.
