In the Eye of the Beholder

I looked straight ahead. The rippling water mesmerizing. I continue down the
path towards the small town. The towns folk see me advance. Their eyes grow
wide, they rush around screaming. Others come out to see the what is causing
such trouble. I continue on, squinting from the sun. I reach the small town
square as a large crowd forms around the horse and cart I entered on. A small
pudgy man with beady eyes approaches my cage.
"You are prosecuted for placing a curse upon old man Edwards. As a result you
have been labled a witch. How do you plead?"
"Not guilty"
"LIAR!!!!"
I saw my doom in the eyes of my gaolers. I know my fate was sealed. I lowerd my
head.
"For obviously guilty crime you shall be drowned and if you float you are a
witch. If you sink....my God have mercy on your soul."
I'm left in the town square untill dusk. My time was nigh when the people of the
town gathered again with large fire torches and pitch forks. My prison was
pulled towards the dunking area of the lake. One of the most famous of my time.
The strongest of the clan hoisted my cage above the deep water. I focus my
attention on the reflection of my own eyes as a tear falls and breaks the
crystal image, ripples upon ripples replacing it.
I turn away from my reflection. I switch off the light and leave the bathroom. I
grab the keys off the small coffee table and leave the apartment. I start up my
porsche and speed down the road. I look in the review mirror and see flashes of
my past in my eyes. I let out a slight giggle.
"Poor, bewildered, fools. Never thought that if a person was really a witch that
they would just cast a spell and be born again."
I put my eyes back on the road but my reflection didn't follow.
