PAUMANAUKE POW-WOW
Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts proudly presents the 18th Annual Paumanauke Pow-Wow. The Arts of the
American Indians. Each year we bring the music, dance, and food of the indiginous people to the general public.
Come and join us in "A Celebration of People Gathered in Honor of Native American Cultures," among the beautiful
surroundings of Tanner Park in Copiague, New York. The town was actually named after the Copiag Indians who
used Tanner Park as a meeting place up until the late 1800's.
We also have silversmiths, artists, beadworkers, and potters on site. You can view and purchase these goods.
The traditional Pow-Wow was where Indians of different tribes would meet to trade goods, swap stories, and celebrate a
certain time of year. The dances would be an offering to the "Great Spirit" for the health, abundant harvest, and
to remember those who are ill or war casualties.
View the different dances: Honor Dance, Round Dance, Rabbit & Snake Dance. Please respect Pow-Wow Protocol.
Do not enter the Sacred Circle, Unless you are asked to join us in a dance. Please do not take pictures
without asking the Dancer.
With the Indian Spirit in mind, it is good to remembr that part of the money taken in supports our college fund.
Instead of furs & beads, we now trade in education of young minds. This past year, we awarded eight scholarships:
Sarah Rebecca Augustine, Jositua D. Burns, Tsoniki Y. Crazy Bull, Christina Renae Dawes, Eileen Jennifer Edwards,
Sarah Kostelecky, Robert J. Sanoray, Alize Jo Schlechter. We would like to congratulate them all!
Join us in the celebration of the Tribes getting together for a feast dance, and to share the summer, on August
9th and 10th 1998.
