Self Portrait with Palette, 1906

During the time that Picasso painted this self-portrait, he was in transition
towards his Analytical
Cubism period. In this transition time, called
Protocubism, Picasso started making flatter images, and using less colors.
This is evident in this painting, both in the flatness of Picasso's body,
and the lack of color. Even on his palette in the painting, there are very few colors.
In this work, Picasso shows that he has mastered traditional forms of bodies,
and is now more interested in interpretations of forms, bodies and shapes, as we can see in the
changing forms of Picasso's body (the body is 2-Dimensional, while the
face is obviously 3-dimensional). We see here that Picasso is impatient to
continue on to different types of painting, which he would do in a few years,
when he began his Analytical Cubism period.
