My Background
The Early Years
I was born in Columbus, Ohio,
while my father was teaching American Literature at
Ohio State, but moved to
Shelburne,
Vermont, when I was three months old so he could teach at the
University of
Vermont. We lived in
Vermont until I was six, whereupon we moved to Lanham, Maryland.
We lived in Maryland for two
years while my father taught at Howard
University in nearby
Washington, D.C.
In the summer of 1968, we moved to
Hayward, California, so my father could teach at
Cal State University, Hayward,
for the summer. My parents liked
California so well that they moved out permanently at the end of
the summer, and I've remained here ever since.
The Middle Years
I graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1978. I worked
for a couple years and started going to college at night. I
graduated with a degree in business from
Chabot College a couple
years thereafter.
Other than the two years (1979-1981) which I spent in
Sacramento, I've lived in the Bay Area.
I guess I'm a semi-native. As an adult,
I lived in
Castro Valley, Hayward,
and San Francisco. I currently
live in Concord. I've lived
here since 1989.
