1984
OILERS & ISLANDERS BEAT THE WORLD

defeats
The 1984 Canada Cup was different on two fronts right from the beginning. Finland, who had won only 1 game in Canada Cup history to that point, was dropped from the tournament in favour of West Germany. The German squad would go 0-4-1 but finished ahead of a disappointing Czech team because of their goals-for statistic. The tournament also marked the first Canada Cup for the Soviets without their saving grace Vladislav Tretiak, and the second time that they would miss the finals.

GAME ONE
THE OLYMPIC SADDLEDOME
CALGARY, CANADA

SWEDEN 2 - CANADA 5
Canada also had had a dissapointing Cup thus far. They just made the semi-finals with a fourth place finish at 2-2-1. But in the semis Mike Bossy gave Canada another thrilling overtime win against the first place Russians and went on to play Sweden who just finished ahead of Canada in third, but then humiliated the USA 9-2. Canada, still fumming over the last Canada Cup, returned the favour to Sweden and beat them easily.
