The history of this rivalry needs no explaination. Both countries had always felt they were the best of the world, and they always meant to prove that whenever they stepped on the ice with each other.
Probably the greatest example of this rivalry occured not at a top level tournament, but at the World Junior Championships in 1987. Canada had a two goal lead in the game and were on their way to a gold medal, when all of a sudden, some chippy play and a few minor incidents from both sides resulted in a bench clearing brawl. When the referees could not get a hold on the situation, the arena was evacuated, the power shut off, and the two teams continued to fight in the dark.
Needless to say, both teams were suspended and the gold medal went to Finland.
