When Phil Esposito retired from the NHL he was second on the all-time goals list. After he played his second and last top level international in 1976 he was the leader, and remained so untill 1987. But he was always Canada's leader, on and off the ice. It was Esposito's emotional Vancouver plea to the fans of Canada on nation-wide t.v. that the team and country rallied behind and led Canada to the win in '72
"We're completely disappointed. I can't belive it. We're trying hard. They have a good team. We're all here because we love Canada. It's our home and that's the only reason we came."
