What the Future Holds
Written by Heather Breazzeal
The year is 2093. The island of Balboa is now a prison with walls so high they can touch the stars. At the top of these walls there's electrified spikes with thorns attached to each spike. The prisoners down below are sorry for their mistakes, but their sentence is for life. The serious offenders will be sent to Hawaii penetentuary where they'll be sentenced to death.
The only government America has is the President. That's the way it is with all the countries. There's world peace and no hunger. And to think none of this would have been if the people of the twentieth century wouldn't have done something about the atmosphere. As children have all been taught history, they can all easily remember the year 1999./ That's the year when the world took a giant step foward and banned smoking and aerosol hair srays.
This was just the beginning. In the year 2003, electric cars replaced gas powered cars. Anyone caught driving a gas powered car was put to death. In 2005, planes and boats turned electric. Of course, batteries weren't good for the environment, so in September of this particular year, micro-chips were developed for all moving vehicles. Big improvements, but there was more to be done. The very best year was 2023, when computerized electricity and electronic fireplaces were invented.
The world has created a few more norms since then, such as no swearing, no lying, and one president per country.
All the lawas have been enforced completely. The punishments are simple: Swearing and lying get a person a life sentence in prison. Smoking, using aerosol hair spray, and smuggling gas powered cars gets a person a death penalty.
The world has improved. Although the prison rate has gone up, people outside the prison walls are happy. However, if the prison rate keeps going up, then the president will have to come up with a new death penalty for liars.
