RED CEDAR BARK CEREMONY

This dance reflects part of the Tseka or Red Cedar Bark Cermemony of the Kwakwak'wakw tribes from the northwest coast of British Columbia.
The ceremony is part of a potlatch, usually a day long celebration of a special event or rite of passage.
This particular ceremony is the initiation of a qualified young person into the tribe. The young initiate is sent into the forest and is overcome by spirits.
The two spirits are Gwakami (Raven) and Galukwami (Crooked Beak) from the north end of the world. The dancers' mask are hand-carved cedar. The kilts are made from cedar bark.
