"The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant"
Notes
~~~~~~~
The pages are numbered so that, in Winglyph format, each page of hieroglyphs fits on an A4 sheet.
Lines with numbers in round brackets (...) are from de Buck's Readingbook. The new numbering system, in square brackets [...], and additional lines, are from Parkinson's book.
Headings are included for each petition.
I have put spaces between sentences and/or phrases that do not exist in the original text. This is a guide only to help recognise the constructions.
The story has survived in four incomplete manuscripts.
I am mostly following B1, with some of R at the beginning, and B2 at the end, and have added some individual words in brackets < > from R, Bt and B2, where I thought they might fill out the meaning.
For the word 'spr' - petition, I have replaced N11 with F42. When written in hieratic a quick penstroke looks like a simple line, even though the F42 sign was meant.
I was also tempted to change A17 to A21 for the determinative in 'srw' - officials, A21 being the correct hieroglyphic form, then I noticed there are actually four instances of A17 and four of A21 in the transcriptions of the text. The two signs are very similar in hieratic, but perhaps there's a reason for the difference.
R(4) #6 .. (at end of line) see Parkinson [R,1.4] note 5.b
R(6) kA anx=i - Parkinson [R,1.6]
R(16) de Buck uses three angled strokes which I took to be M33A, indicating that these are seed bearing plants, or perhaps even the seeds from the plants. Parkinson has them as plural markers.
R(38) {im} .. present in manuscript B1,18 and Bt,19, but not in R
R(39) For the name of Nemtynakht de Buck uses G26B-A24-A1, this has been changed to G7B-t:y-A24-A1. (According to Berlev, 1969)
R(42) {Hr} and {Dd=f} .. in B1,22 and Bt,24 (Parkinson- p.7,8)
R(43) {mnx} .. B1,23 and Bt,25 (P- p.8)
R(49) {wn:n-i:n} .. B1,30 and Bt,34 (P- p.9)
