More About Amazons

From: (whitesword)

Further to my Amazons post a few days ago, several marvelous people let me know about the current wave of archaeological discoveries, and I hit the net for a global search. The result was amazing, there are plenty of sites out there devoted to the Amazon race! Here are a couple of great sites you may like to visit:

http://www.speakeasy.org/~music/amazon.html
http://www.net4you.co.at/users/poellauery/Amazons/

These sites have stacks of information, including downloadable photographs of artefacts recovered from what appear to be Amazon tombs in the Ukraine and elsewhere around the Black Sea.

This is an intensely exciting prospect, the "rehabilitation" of an entire cycle of history that has hitherto been regarded purely as myth. Now I doubt the Amazon connection has yet been established to general scientific satisfaction, but the Scythian, Samation and Sauromation connection is more or less established, and the Amazons are almost certainly close at hand. Some researchers beleive they have identified the site of the Amazon capital, on the northern plain of Turkey.

Regarding the location of this city, Themiscyra, on the river Thermodon, Robert Graves (whose text I used as my primary source for the first posting) seems to have had some difficulty with establishing the locality. In one passage his description tallies with the Black Sea coast of Turkey, while another passage seems to intimate the shores of Romania, far to the north of the Danube delta... Both areas are thought to be Amazon heartland, as the culture seems to have occupied most of the shoreline of the Black Sea.

Just think of it: First Troy returns from myth to fact, now Amazons. Amazons are said to have taken Troy and held it a short while, in the 11th or 12th C BC. Both are so ingrained in the "mythology" of Ancient Greece that we have previously ascribed them purely to figmentary visualisation. Bt if they are real, what else is lying out there waiting to be discovered?

Now I'm glad I studied archaeology at college, I really am!

Enthusiastically,

Whitesword
