|I know this forum is about to be filled with gazillions
|of convention posts (at least they're on topic), so mine
|will probably get lost in the flood. But I just had to post this
|since this was my first convention, and in case
|some of the people I met there are on this forum. So here goes:
|The Good
|1). I got to meet some really awesome people and be able to
|talk about XENA to actual people --in person! I could talk
|shamelessly about things like net forums, handles, etc. Back
|at home, I'm the only person who knows that I watch the show.
|At first, I felt awkward talking to people about Xena
|topics, but as the night drew on, I became more and more
|relaxed, and it was so cool to be able to *analyze* or debate
|issues about the show (ex. when did the rift technically begin?
|Who's fault was it?* etc.) and not have to worry about being
|carried off by men in white uniforms! (Though perhaps, that
|wouldn't be such a bad idea). Furthermore, the ENTIRE
|building was just about filled with Xena fans all night and all
|day so you never ran out of people to talk to!
|2). I had some heavy debates with whole groups of subtexters
|(I'm a non-subtext fan) and nobody ever got mad! If anything,
|we actually agreed on just about everything! It was all in fun, and
|it's amazing how much it changes the mood of things when you
|actually see the person to whom you are talking, and thus be able
|to understand *how* they are saying things as much as *what*
|they are saying. Imagine that- I made some good friends by
|debating about subtext!
|3). I never saw such devoted fans for a TV show. (But then, like
|I said earlier, this was the first convention I ever went to.) People
|volunteered to help set up the tables and stuff and to help sell the
|merchandise, etc. I helped out a little too, so I could have gotten
|a free T-shirt which the others got for helping out. But then I
|thought, "What would I do with a 'Xena' shirt? Wear it in public?
|Hmmm...no."
|4). I got to pose with Hudson, and get her and Danielle's
|autographs. I'll post my collection of convention pics sometime.
|5). Hudson lifted her skirt for all to see. (Until her dad gave her a
|nasty look).
|6). Got to see Hudson's parents and find out a little what Hudson
|was like as a kid.
|7). Hudson screamed for us several times, though none of them lasted two
|minutes like the one people said she did a at Burbank.
|8). I met people who've actually read my fanfic! I never thought anyone
|actually read that stuff!
|9). A fight broke out at the hotel afterwards at a wedding party.
|Cops came, and had to bust a wedding party of all things!
|10). I might add more later on to this thread, but you're probably
|getting bored so:
|The Bad and Ugly
|1). The convention got a little cheesy at points. Little things like
|having *VIDEO 1* on the screen for the opening video (it just
|takes the push of a button guys). The stage was low so visiblity
|was hampered by those sitting in front of you. Much of the merchandise
|was overpriced though I guess that's to be
|expected since this is a convention. But basically, I wasn't too
|impressed with the audio/visuals and thought they could have
|done a lot more).
|2). The hotel sucked. This wasn't what I'd expect from the
|"Hilton". For instance, there were only eight or so channels on
|TV! Of course, I never stayed in my room long enough to watch
|TV anyway, but it's the principle. And don't even think about
|eating at the hotel restauraunt- 12 bucks for a furkin'**
|cheeseburger!!!!
|3). Remember when your teachers used to tell you that there is
|no such thing as a stupid question? They'd think again if
|they ever attended a Xena convention. Questions like,
|"Danielle, will you give me a hug...again?" After the guy explicitly
|told the audience to not put the guests on the spot like that the
|first time around. Some of the fans also seemed to ignore the
|"one question per person" rule. This one girl got so annoying that
|Hudson said, "If I answer your question, will you leave?". And
|then there was this guy who kept pointing at Hudson and got all serious
|and stuff. It's like, does this guy even TRY to not be such
|a GEEK?
|4). Is there really such a thing as a "Hudson haze"?? (In reference
|to a question posed by someone in the audience).
|5). Something about the convention just exhausted me. I think it was
|all the waiting in line and crowds and stuff. I was having fun but in
|all
|honesty, I think I had more fun going around meeting fellow Xena fans in
|the hotel.
|6). I think it's healthy for people to be creative and imaginative
|and to allow themselves to be silly once in awhile. But I did meet
|some people, who (and I'm not trying to be callous here),
|are disillusioned and in all seriousness should seek help.
|6). But the absolute worst thing I can think of as far as how this
|convention went for me----Sharon Delaney (the lady at Creation) called
|me "young lady" (I'm a guy) during her question/answer session!! I mean,
|I can understand why people might make that mistake about me on the
|forum because my handle is somewhat misleading. But sheesh, Sharon- GET
|NEW GLASSES! I know
|I'm pretty, but that's a stretch!:) (I'm not really ticked about this.
|People know that Sharon has bad eyesight, and I WAS pretty
|far away. Anyway, I got hit on by several female Xenites and not
|one male so that confirms-- oh wait...).

|richi
|* I used to think that both Gabrielle and Xena were responsible
|for the "rift", until someone at the convention pointed out to me
|that Gabrielle's whole defense was that Xena left her alone when
|she went off to fight Caesar hence Gabrielle was raped by
|Dahok. But really, it wasn't Xena's obligation to watch over
|Gabrielle 24/7, and it was Gabrielle's idea to go follow that
|cult to begin with. It wasn't Xena's fault that Gabrielle got
|involved with that and ended up stabbing that priest. After
|all, when Gabrielle first imposed herself on Xena to take
|her on as a companion, the deal wasn't that she would
|have to baby sit her every single minute. Okay- you get
|the picture! Ordinary people would think
|these types of discussions are inane. It's just
|a stupid show and we take it too far. But it WAS so much fun
|to be able to talk to people about things like this and at least
|feel comfortable in the fact that if I'm a nut for doing this,
|I'm not alone!

|** In case you're new here, "furkin''" is our altenative to
|swearing.
