For those of you who may be weary of hearing about this....I promise... this is the last post I shall ever write about the infamous "Gab Drag."
This is one subject I find deeply disturbing. Yes, I KNOW IT IS FICTIONAL. But recent headlines of REAL-LIFE events prove that such hideous crimes really DO OCCUR. And at this particular point in time, I just have to say one more thing about it.
Yesterday, a Texas jury found a white man guilty of the DRAGGING death murder of a black man last summer.
John William King, a self-described "white supremacist," along with 2 "buddies," tied a chain around James Byrd, the victim, and dragged his body down a 2-mile stretch of a southeast Texas country road. Byrd was ripped to pieces.... authorities found body parts scattered all along the path.
Their dragging mechanism was a pickup truck (a modern-day horse), and instead of a rope, they used a 24-foot logging chain.
Rather than throwing his body off a cliff into the sea, they dumped (what was left of it) in front of a church, which, according to the local district attorney, symbolized their "defiance to God."
The men committed this unspeakable crime for the simple reason that they didn't like the color of this man's skin.
(On this fictional TV show, our heroine, Xena committed this unspeakable crime against Gabrielle for the simple reason that she felt her best friend had betrayed her.)
But does it matter why?
Is murder (or attempted murder) ever justified?
Hell no.
I've seen some of you write that you "liked" the Gab-Drag.
Liking the Rift is one thing.... but can somebody please tell me what there is to "like" about the Gab Drag???
I know that what happened on XENA was not real. But what happened on that Texas road last summer was real. HORRIBLY real. Just ask this poor man's family.
How can we give the Gab Drag our nod of approval after what we've seen happen in the REAL world? How can we call it ENTERTAINMENT?
